Opera Mini Global Test v4.1 latest offering from Opera

Posted by Divyang on September 9, 2008

As Opera Mini gains more users around the world we’re trying to make sure that it works well for everyone. As part of this we’re adding more of the data centres where the web pages you request are formatted, compressed and sent on their way to your phone. The first new data centre is in the USA.

To make this work we’ve had to make some changes in the Opera Mini server software. We need your help to test the system before we trust it with all the Opera Mini users (because that’s a lot of people).

So, if you want to help you just need to download and install a special version of Opera Mini 4.1. It can be installed on your phone at the same time as the normal version.

The main difference you’ll probably notice is that page titles are all prefixed by either “[EU]” or “[US]” depending on which data centre you’re currently using. You’ll be allocated to one or another depending on where you are in the world and which is busier. There are some other changes and I’m curious to see if you spot them

Remember, this is a test so it might not always work correctly, we might sometimes have to make changes or fix things. You should keep your normal Opera Mini around as well.

Opera Mini v4.1.11355 *update*

Posted by Divyang on May 22, 2008

The peoples’ choice:
the world’s favorite mobile Web browser

Introducing Opera Mini™ 4.1.
Used by more than 44 million people — Opera Mini just keeps getting better.
Opera Mini enables you to take your full Web experience to your phone. Stay in touch with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, get your e-mail on the go, do your online banking. There are no limits — Opera Mini is the quick, easy and secure way to get any Web page you want.

Opera Mini Features

Opera Mini 4.1 lets you have the full Web everywhere. This newest release includes several new features, including automatic completion of Web addresses, making it easier to get to the sites you need; tools for attaching files to Web-based email; uploading photos to your blog or other site; downloading attachments from email for storage on your phone; and saving and viewing pages offline.
New in Opera Mini 4.1

Now even faster

Prior to this release, we upgraded our servers and Opera Mini now receives your requested Web pages up to 50% faster. So you can now access sites like Facebook, BBC, and any of your other favorite Web sites even faster, with Desktop-like speeds.
Find things faster

The new Opera Mini 4.1 lets you search for text within a Web page so you can get to the information you need even quicker than before.
Get to your Web sites faster

When typing Web addresses, Opera Mini 4.1 will recognize and suggest completions for you based on your Bookmarks and browsing history, making address input faster, easier and much more intuitive.
Download and upload files

On phones with JSR-75, you can now upload and download files using Opera Mini 4.1, without being re-routed to your phone’s native browser. Update your blog while on the go. Upload photos to your Web site or social network. Add attachments easily to Web-based email, and download other non media-rich content to your phone using Opera Mini 4.1.
Save it for later

On phones with JSR-75, Opera Mini 4.1 lets you save pages for offline viewing so you can quickly access and read your desired Web content, even when you’re on a plane, in the subway, or in other places where you can’t get network reception. Depending on your phone, you may need to choose a destination folder for storing pages for offline viewing.
Existing Top Features

Sync bookmarks and Speed Dial

Opera Mini 4.1 features Opera Link, which allows you to synchronize your bookmarks and Speed Dial with a computer running Opera 9.50 or other mobile device running Opera Mini 4.
To use Opera Link with Opera Mini, simply choose “Synchronize Opera” from within Opera Mini and enter your current My Opera login details (or register a free My Opera account) to synchronize your bookmarks between your phone and your computer. Access and edit the bookmarks from any other browser by going to the Opera Link page.
View pages in Landscape mode

To view the Web on a wider screen, just hit * # and flip your phone to the side to enjoy browsing in Landscape mode. Change your default view to landscape by turning “Landscape mode” on inside the Settings menu.**
Give your phone a mouse

Opera Mini gives your phone a virtual mouse, so you can easily scroll in any direction. Move the mouse cursor towards what you want, and then it quickly snaps your view to the link or content.
Power scrolling shortcuts

Scroll at warp speed using your phone keypad. Find your way around on the Web pages quicker by using your phone’s number keys. Press 2 to go up, 4 to go left, 6 to go right and 8 to go down. Hitting 5 zooms you in and out.
Create custom search shortcuts

Just like in Opera for your computer, you can create your own Web search from any search field on the Internet using Opera Mini 4.1. Simply click on the search field that you want to grab on a Web page and then choose “Create search” within your menu alternatives. Then you can enjoy making frequent searches without having to type in the site link again.
Tools and support for Web designers

We support Web designers who want to make their Web sites look even better to those browsing with Opera Mini. In Opera Mini 4.1, we have included all of the CSS support that Web designers need to make their Web pages look pixel perfect on in the mobile Web world

Yellow Pages v3.1.15 Yell.com mobile

Posted by Divyang on May 19, 2008

Quicker and easier to use—we’ve reduced the number of steps to find what you want, added auto-suggest (including all top asked-for terms) and we now remember recent requests (the ones you’ve entered) to the service.

Improved search—now you can be even more confident that we can find you the results that really meet your needs.

Send to your friends—for the many who use the service to help organise their busy lives, we’ve added a feature that lets you send details of any search to your friends. So next time you want to organise a venue to meet up, you can find the details on Yell.com mobile and just send them straight to all your friends.

Save to your contacts—we realise that many people need to contact the same place again and again (gym, hairdresser, pizza, etc.), so now, to save searching each time you need a number, you can search just once and save the details directly to your contacts.

Ever since we started offering services to mobile users we have continually looked to make them better. These are some of the things that we have done recently:

Supporting new devices—as well as continually adding new devices as they hit the high street we have recently added two more major manufacturers to the list of supported devices: Blackberry and LG.

Easier to get the service—we are always exploring more flexible ways to help users get Yell.com mobile on their device. In addition to the traditional text message request for the service, we’ve introduced a number of other ways to get it: from our PC websites Yell.com or Yellmobile.com; from our mobile website mobile.yell.com; or just get a friend to send you a link from their version of Yell.com mobile.

Works for international users—while not specifically designed for overseas users, we’ve ensured that anyone who wants to use the service can now do so (subject to their mobile service provider).

Keep watching these pages for updates as we continue to add new features over the coming months!!

Want a sexy UI in your Java MIDlet? It’s now possible with LWTUI!

Posted by Divyang on May 15, 2008

THANX TO DANIEL FOR THIS INFO!

Sexy UIs are all the rage today, right? FlashLite apps, WRT Widgets, WidSets, all of them have distinctive user experiences which differ greatly from the way we interact with native S40 and S60 applications. More colors, more animations, better usability, all making up a great way for developers to differentiate their applications and make them more attractive to the end user.

In Java MIDlets however, you are stuck with a very poor UI toolkit, the LCDUI, which has very few components and few options on how to alter their appearance; most of the time you’re giving hints to the underlying implementation regarding the way you want the components to be displayed. Even if you do so, however, there’s still a big chance your hints will be ignored and the UI will be rendered differently on each device. This can be a pain if you are developing for many different phones, with different screen sizes, input methods and form factors. Actually, to be fair, this can be a pain even if your target is a single device.

To circumvent these challenges, developers had either to developer their own UI toolkits, based on raw Canvasses, or use a 3rd. party toolkit such as J2ME Polish, which is great but requires a paid license to develop commercial applications, and this can be an unbearable cost to a small developer.

Searching the web and some mailing lists, I found this very interesting project, called LTWUI (Lightweight UI Toolkit), which is a cross-device UI toolkit created to provide developers with the possibility of developing compelling user interfaces without writing painful low-level Canvas code. It’s based on Swing programming paradigm and it’s key functionalities are:

  • Swing Like MVC
  • Layouts
  • PLAF & Themes
  • Fonts
  • Touch Screen
  • Animations & Transitions
  • Rich widgets
  • 3D Integration
  • Painters
  • Modal Dialogs
  • External Tools
  • I18N/L10N
  • It’s still in Early Access release but you can go to the project page and download it so you can play around with the toolkit and run its demos on emulators and real devices. The great thing is that the library is released under the Sun Licensing Agreement (SLA) which makes it usable by commercial applications without having to pay any fee.

I ran the LWTUIDemo midlet on my Nokia E61i and N95 and it worked beautifully. It’s a bit slow though, but nothing that compromises the user experience. I recorded a video of LWTUI running on my N95, so you can see what’s up for use in your Java apps; I guarantee you will enjoy it.

    WidSets Beta testing returns!

Posted by Divyang on May 10, 2008

Last January-February we run a beta testing for WidSets new release for the first time. I believe it was a great experience for all of us. The active members got a chance to try out and provide some early feedback on new features and still affect the final version that went live in February. We got a possibility to see the first reactions how the WidSets community would feel about the new features. This was great co-operation between the Beta WidSeteers and WidSets and that’s something we hope to continue in the future, too.

WidSets service itself works nicely as a one way to collect feedback. The Beta WidSeteers have some additional reporting widgets on the dashboard of new WidSets client, which gives them an easy and mobile way to provide the feedback to us. Of course, the beta testing site’s Forum is always a good way to comment things as well as the public chat widget where Beta WidSeteers can chat about the new version or whatever.

Currently we are working on the next release which will have improvements to some old features and but also something totally new features, too. We’ll start the registration for beta testing very soon. If you are committed to use and test the new version of WidSets and eager to provide some feedback, tune in the WidSets Forum. There will be an announcement very shortly about beta testing and instructions, how to get involved.

Once again big thanks for all Beta WidSeteers that provided feedback last February. Soon it will be time to get busy again. I hope many of you will join this effort this time!

Opera Mini 4.1 – Final version Releasing next week

Posted by Divyang on May 10, 2008

The Mini Team is now preparing the final version of Opera Mini 4.1. Since
the beta we have done more than 150 changes to fix various issues and to
ensure that it will run as well as possible on your device. Many of these
changes are based directly on feedback from you. Among other things we
have adjusted how the “Save Page” function works and also made it possible
for BlackBerry users to surf with Wi-Fi. And to the person that reported
“Find in page does not work in Bookmarks page”: we have fixed that one as
    well

We would like to use this opportunity to thank you for the help in the
test phase. Without your support we would not have been able to find all
the strange issues on all those strange phones. Now, get ready to help
spread the word that a new version of the worlds most popular mobile
    browser has arrived.

    WHERE™ v2.1 GPS enabled widgets

Posted by Divyang on May 9, 2008

    Know WHERE? Your phone does.

With WHERE™ location enabled widgets, you drag widgets like your local weather forecast, Yelp, Eventful, Burger King®, AIM® Buddy Finder and more from the web to your handset, or discover them directly on your phone. And if you can’t find the widget you want today, not to worry, we’re always adding more.

Widgets are small (or large) applications that help you find interesting things and do everyday tasks. WHERE Widgets usually access your GPS phone location to determine where you are. Examples of widgets are local Weather, Ski Reports, Golf Courses, My Favorite Places, and The World’s Largest Things.

Opera Mini 4.1 beta – Upgrade with BiDi support for feeds

Posted by Divyang on May 7, 2008

Opera Mini 4.1 beta lets you have the full Web everywhere. This newest release includes several new features, including automatic completion of Web addresses, making it easier to get to the sites you need; tools for attaching files to Web-based email; uploading photos to your blog or other site; downloading attachments from email for storage on your phone; and saving and viewing pages offline.

The Opera Mini 4 servers have been upgraded with quite a few improvements. To begin with the servers should now be nicer to phones that are low on available memory. but what we are are especially pleased with the new feed system and hope you will like it too:

    • Improved feed (RSS/Atom) viewer to support for bidirectional text and layout. Oh, and it’s faster.
    • Fixed bug with <select> items being wrongly positioned.
    • Fixed problem with images in <object> tags not being rendered correctly.
    • Made sure image maps gets rescaled to fit the screen width.
    • Fixed problem with page being zoomed in when going to page which is in history.
    • Fixed problem with some phones with little memory getting too many images.
    • The server now prioritizes sending images at the top of the document if the phone’s too low on memory to display them all.

And for those of you using the 4.1 beta client:

    • Downloading of files which require authentication now works (gmail etc).
    • Redesigned the file download page.
